How to Tell You Need Light Installation

Lighting seldom fails outright. It gets dim, patchy or plain irritating to live with, and that is usually what prompts the call:

  • Halogen downlights throwing heat into the roof space and money out the door
  • Lights that dip or flicker when an appliance kicks in somewhere else
  • One central batten trying to do the work of three fittings
  • Yellowed, cracked or discoloured fittings that date the whole room
  • A renovation that moved the walls and left the lighting where it was
  • Outdoor fittings seized up, full of water, or simply dead

Light Installation: What We Actually Do

Lighting covers a lot of ground, from a single swap to a room drawn from scratch. Five jobs make up most of it:

01

LED downlight installs and changeovers

Halogens come out and LEDs go in, which means fewer holes overhead, far less heat, and a ceiling that stops cooking itself.

02

Pendants and feature fittings

Benches, stairwells and dining tables, mounted to hold, and switched where your hand actually goes looking.

03

Dimmers and switching layouts

The dimmer gets matched to the driver in the fitting, so nothing buzzes, strobes or dies two years early.

04

Outdoor and sensor lighting

Floods, path and garden fittings, sealed and rated for weather rather than hoping for a dry decade.

05

Whole-room lighting plans

When one light will not cut it, the circuit and the fitting positions get drawn before anything is cut into the ceiling.

What Affects the Cost of Light Installation

The same fitting count in two rooms can price quite differently. What separates them:

  • The fitting count, and whether wiring already runs to each spot
  • What sits above the ceiling, since a generous roof space and a tight void are different jobs
  • The switching you want: single, two-way, dimmed, or sensor-driven
  • The fittings themselves, because a decent driver and a proper body cost more than a bargain pack
  • Whether the cable route goes through the roof space or has to be chased into masonry
  • Which era the house belongs to, since a cottage with one point per room needs circuits, not just fittings

You get a free written quote, and the price we quote is the price you pay. New customers take $50 off your first service on top.

What We See in Bronte Homes

Three vintages of lighting turn up in the same street here, and each one asks for something different.

The pre-1940 cottages were wired for a single point in the middle of each room. Task light over a bench, a lamp circuit, a dimmer: all of it is an addition rather than a swap.

The 1980s to 2000s houses carry the first downlight wave. Usually that means halogens, plenty of heat, and holes cut on a grid that suited the ceiling rather than the room.

The newest rebuilds arrive with LED already fitted, so the work there is repairing a layout that photographed well and lives badly.

Which is why the first question is never which fitting you want. It is which of those three houses you are standing in, because that decides whether we are running new circuits or reusing what is already above you.

The Gear We Fit and Why

Our default fittings come from SAL and Beacon Lighting. They build drivers that survive a Sydney summer in a roof space, which is where cheap gear quietly gives up.

The fitting is only half of it. A good LED behind a mismatched dimmer will still flicker, so we pair them properly rather than selling you the part with the best packaging.

If you have already fallen for something at a showroom, bring it. We will tell you straight whether it will do what you want it to.

Standards and Paperwork, Explained Simply

Lighting is licensed work, even when it looks like nothing more than swapping a fitting. Hardwired means hands off.

New and altered lighting circuits are wired to AS/NZS 3000, the standard every electrician in NSW works to. All our work runs under NSW Electrical Contractor Licence #452529C.

Adding or altering a circuit is notifiable electrical work. It gets tested before we sign off, then a certificate of compliance is lodged with NSW Fair Trading and you keep a copy.

And the plain version: DIY electrical work is illegal in NSW. A ceiling full of cable is not the place to find out why.

Our Light Installation Process, Start to Finish

Most lighting jobs run from a half day to a full day. Doing every room at once takes longer, and we say so up front rather than at four o'clock.

  1. We look at the actual room Photos hide the things that matter, like the void above the ceiling and where the existing points sit. So we come and look, then quote.

  2. Fittings and switching get settled You pick from real options at real prices, we write it down, and nothing gets ordered until you are happy with the plan.

  3. Install day Drop sheets down and the place left tidy. Old fittings come out, new ones go in, and the ceiling gets patched where holes do not line up.

  4. Tested before handover Every circuit we touched is tested before we sign off, you get shown how the dimmers and sensors are set, and the paperwork follows.

Why Locals Choose Us for Light Installation

Nobody enjoys a lighting quote that grows. Ours does not: you get a fixed written price before we start, and it holds even when a job takes us longer than we thought.

One homeowner, Michael, said it well in a Google review. We turned up when we said we would, went through the choices without rushing him, and knew the gear well enough to explain the difference.

That is the whole pitch, really. Licensed work, honest options, no theatre.

Related Work and Surrounding Areas

New lighting often exposes what is behind it. A tired board may need switchboard upgrades before extra circuits go anywhere, and a broader plan for the house is on our residential electrician page.

We work throughout Bronte and the surrounding Randwick area, including Bondi, Clovelly and Waverley.

Common questions

Your Light Installation FAQs

Six questions we field most weeks about lighting.

Who supplies the parts, you or me?

Either way works. Most people let us supply the fittings so the whole lot sits under one warranty, but if you have picked something yourself we will check it is compliant and fit it.

Does light installation involve any notification paperwork in NSW?

Adding or altering a lighting circuit is notifiable electrical work. It is tested, then a certificate of compliance goes to NSW Fair Trading, and the copy is yours to keep.

How do I know it's time for light installation?

When the lights annoy you rather than fail. Heat off halogens, dim corners, a room running on one ceiling batten, or a switch stranded in the wrong place after a renovation are all normal reasons to call.

What guarantee do you give on light installation?

Our workmanship carries a lifetime guarantee, and fittings we supply get a 12-month product warranty on top of whatever the maker offers. The certificate for both is emailed once the job is done.

What does light installation usually cost?

Fitting count, switching and whatever the ceiling gives us to work with all move it. We look at the room, quote it for nothing, put it in writing, and the price we quote is the price you pay.

Can I choose the brand of gear for light installation?

Of course. SAL and Beacon Lighting are our default because the drivers go the distance, but if you have a fitting in mind we will price it and tell you honestly how it will perform.
